Asteroid named after famous gynecologist Ettore Cittadini: “Grateful for this recognition”
The asteroid 127975 has officially been named Ettore Cittadini, an Italian gynecologist and pioneer of medically assisted procreation. The prestigious recognition by the International Astronomical Union will be presented on Tuesday, November 5, during the Gal Hassin 2024 Event in Isnello. “His work has made a great contribution to the future of gender medicine – explain the organizers of the event -. Professor Ettore Cittadini is the Gal Hassin Award winner for Civilization 2024”.
The naming of asteroid 2003 HG22 after the famous gynecologist was an idea by Sabrina Masiero, an astrophysicist at the Gal Hassin Foundation, and was presented to the IAU Commission by Mario Di Martino, who is also part of the Inaf and the Observatory of Turin, and co-founder of Gal Hassin.
“The event on November 5 will see the presence of professors Telmo Pievani from the University of Padua and Massimo Polidoro, who teaches at both the University of Padua and the University of Milan-Bicocca, both Gal Hassin 2024 winners. There will also be other prestigious international names in culture and astrophysics. The asteroid Ettorecittadini was discovered by Fabrizio Bernardi from SpaceDys and Mario Di Martino on April 24, 2003, at the Campo Imperatore astronomical observatory of the Inaf – National Institute of Astrophysics. Belonging to the main Asteroid Belt, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, it has a diameter of about 2 kilometers and an orbital period of 3,372 years (one year on this asteroid lasts about 3.3 Earth years).
“The Gal Hassin is involved in numerous projects and observational campaigns of asteroids, including Near-Earth types – conclude the organizers-. An important synergy is expected with the FlyEye of the European Space Agency that will be placed on the top of Mount Mufara in the coming years, for a more efficient planetary defense at a global level and to cover those sky spaces not yet covered by terrestrial telescopes for one great objective: the safeguarding of life and our planet”.
