Arsenic found during railway tunnel excavation in Giampilieri-Fiumefreddo, not dangerous.

The soil containing arsenic found in the Sciglio tunnel of the Giampilieri-Fiumefreddo railway project has been classified as non-hazardous waste and will be disposed of as such in an authorized external plant. This is stated by Antonino Pulejo, president of the Messina-Catania Consortium lotto nord, ensuring that they are “implementing all the activities planned to ensure maximum protection for workers and the population in the territories affected by the tunnel excavations”.

“From the results of the investigations – Pulejo continues – the soil subject to analysis has been classified as non-hazardous waste. The investigation conducted on aerodispersed metals in the tunnel found values below the limits set for the health of workers. Similarly, in terms of public health, the concentrations found do not pose risks to human health in the case of exposure to dust inhalation. As soon as the increases in arsenic concentration in the soils of the Sciglio tunnel were detected during the routine monitoring activities carried out by internal and external independent laboratories, in compliance with environmental regulations on the project, the Consortium notified the competent authorities. All measures provided for in cases like this have been immediately activated, involving the parties responsible for managing the issue such as Arpa Sicilia, RFI, Italferr, the Prefect of Messina, the Region of Sicily, the Metropolitan City of Messina, the Municipality of Nizza, and the Municipality of Alì Terme, promoting a request for a technical meeting for the management of the excavated soils and rocks. In this meeting, held on October 18, a short-term solution was proposed which involves disposing of the waste at an authorized external plant”.
