Animal rights activists in Alicudi launch legal action against the capture and deportation of goats
The Region has given the green light to the construction of enclosures where the captured goats from the Aeolian Islands will be detained: 600 goats against a resident population of one hundred inhabitants. However, animal rights activists do not agree with the project and are ready to take legal action.
The Italian association for the defense of animals and the environment, Aidaa, “is opposed to the forced transfer of all the goats from Alicudi, which according to the Region’s plan will then be given to the 25 Sicilian breeders who have requested them.”
“This is a crazy operation for which the capture procedures are not known, the actions taken by the company that will deal with this incident and by the Region’s health department,” say Aidaa animal rights activists. “We reiterate that this is a reckless operation that affects the wildlife that, by law, is the inalienable heritage of the State and that are being given away to breeders who, despite the nice words spent, could exploit them in any way and may even slaughter them. Who will be able – they ask – in the coming months, to ensure the safety and health checks of these animals? Obviously, no one. And then – they conclude – these are animals accustomed to living free and would suffer greatly from captivity or introduction into different stables or herds. We are considering possible further legal actions to stop this mass deportation.”
