Agrigento: he asks if the owner of the establishment “is black,” gets up and leaves. The complaint.
#Agrigento
A disturbing incident recently occurred in Agrigento. A woman entered a restaurant in the city center and, after asking the waitress if the owner of the establishment was a “black woman of color,” and receiving confirmation, she got up and left. The episode was reported on social media by Carmelo Roccaro, president of the social cooperative Al Karhub which manages the restaurant Ginger People&Food.
The restaurant’s chef is Marame Cissè, born in Senegal and arrived in Agrigento to join her husband. In recent years, she has won several awards and accolades, including the title of World Cous Cous Champion. Roccaro, after hearing the waitress’s account, tried to reach the woman and her husband, but they left in their car without engaging in a conversation.
Once the news spread, there were numerous comments on social media. Antonio Liotta wrote, “She is a SuperChef…she has an extraordinary culture far superior to that demonstrated by the ‘lady’ who got up and left Ginger People&Food.” Paolo Cilona expressed his support for Mareme Cisse, saying, “We express our solidarity with the great Mareme Cisse, a talented and brilliant woman, long integrated and appreciated in our hospitable and Gellic city. An unworthy tourist to set foot on the ground of a city that is a melting pot of civilizations with a millennial history. Ad maiora semper.”
There was outrage from both the general public and politicians. “She left the premises because the owner is a woman of color. This is the story that comes from Agrigento, thanks to the denunciation by Carmelo Roccaro, who with the cooperative Al Karhub created Ginger – People&Food – writes Giovanna Iacono, a member of the Democratic Party. A reality with the face and hands of Mareme Cisse, the Senegalese chef who manages the restaurant and creates extraordinary dishes that combine Sicily with Africa. A black woman, indeed. I am very sorry for the ‘lady’ who chose to leave, missing the chance for a journey through flavors that perhaps she would not have known how to appreciate. Cuisine is culture. And culture is not something for racists.”
