Agrigento: City councilor Nello Hamel dies at 71

Agrigento mourns the death of Nello Hamel, a 71-year-old city councilor. His daughter announced his passing on Facebook. Hamel, a retired banker with a law degree, had been a councilor in Agrigento for 30 years and was the former Environment minister in Calogero Firetto’s administration. Despite being wheelchair-bound due to illness, he organized a food drive for the needy and was active in volunteer work. He also founded the popular University of Agrigento and provided free legal assistance to workers and the unemployed. Mayor Franco Miccichè expressed his grief, describing Hamel as a dedicated and respectful politician. Many others also shared heartfelt messages on social media, praising Hamel’s humanity, culture, and honesty.
