The death of cameraman Biondo from Palermo, the family against a Netflix series.

The documentary about the death of Mario Biondo, the Sicilian cameraman married to TV presenter Raquel Sanchez-Silva, is set to arrive on Netflix on August 3rd. Biondo was found hanging with a pashmina on May 30th, 2013, in the library of their house in Madrid. The three-part docuseries, titled “The Last Hours of Mario Biondo,” aims to review the circumstances leading to his death and the discovery of his body. However, the series has already sparked strong controversy.

According to the television platform, the film is the result of extensive research conducted between 2021 and 2023, including over 200 hours of recordings, around twenty interviews, and a review of numerous bibliographic sources. However, the Biondo family fears that the filmmakers will push to support the suicide theory put forward by the Spanish investigators, while downplaying the belief of Italian magistrates that Mario may have been murdered. Despite the passage of 10 years, there are no longer conditions to establish the truth definitively. That is why the cameraman’s relatives have sent a formal warning to the production team, especially after discovering that Guillermo Gomez Sancha, an ex-manager and friend of Raquel Sanchez-Silva, is involved in the making of the documentary.

“This is all a lie, all made up,” emphasized Mario’s mother, Santina D’Alessandro, in a video posted on Facebook. “I am sure they will speak ill of my son,” she continued, referring to the Netflix series, “but we will respond with supporting documents, even showing previously unreleased messages. This time it will be me denouncing Raquel and all the people who have worked to tarnish my son’s memory.” Last year, magistrate Nicola Aiello reluctantly closed the investigation against unknown persons for the death of Mario Biondo. In his ruling, he wrote that “although several pieces of evidence can be identified from the prosecutor’s file, the deficient investigations carried out by Spanish authorities and the lengthy time elapsed since the tragedy have indeed hindered the possibility of conducting investigations that could have identified the perpetrators of the alleged homicide. Ultimately, there are no elements to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, in a hypothetical trial, this theory. Therefore, the request for closure is accepted, and the case files are returned to the prosecutor.”

The magistrate blamed the Spanish magistrates for hastily closing the case and classifying it as a suicide caused by an erotic self-play, highlighting the mistake of not obtaining telephone records and authorizing interceptions of individuals close to Biondo, starting with his wife, now 50 years old, one of the most beloved personalities in Spain. It was Raquel who found her husband’s body and called for help. According to Aiello, “Biondo was killed by an unknown person and subsequently positioned in a manner to simulate a suicide. Nothing can be reproached to the prosecutors and the General Prosecutor’s Office, as they made every possible investigative effort to establish the truth, which was impossible to find due to the investigative delays caused by the deficiencies in the initial investigations.”
