Scholarship named after Piersanti Mattarella established in Realmonte

An event was held at the Realmonte Municipal Library to illustrate the establishment of a scholarship named after Piersanti Mattarella. Those present included the mayor of Realmonte, Sabrina Lattuca, Gaetano Salemi, President of the Lions Club Agrigento Valley of the Temples, Giovanni Tesé, author of the book “Piersanti Mattarella: a Christian politician,” Paola Catanzaro, school principal of the Garibaldi Institute of Realmonte, Luciano Carrubba, a member of the Club and contact person for the Scholarship, as well as members and collaborators.

The idea was born between the parties last August, during the presentation of the book written by Giovanni Tesè, as part of the cultural event “Memory is Heritage.” The author proposed to the Agrigento Lions Club and the Municipality of Realmonte the establishment of a scholarship aimed at students’ education.

The competition will start in Realmonte and is aimed at third-grade students of the Garibaldi Institute of the City of Scala dei Turchi for the school year 2024/25 and will end with the award ceremony on May 24, on the occasion of Piersanti Mattarella’s 90th birthday.

Next stages of the competition will be Agrigento, Porto Empedocle, and Favara, with the participation of each city and school on a rotating annual basis. Only one city will participate each year with its schools.

“I am very satisfied with the meeting,” says Mayor Sabrina Lattuca, “because it was very fruitful and, above all, beneficial for the students. A scholarship dedicated to Piersanti Mattarella, a great politician and example of legality and justice. I thank lawyer Tese, Lions President Salemi, Carrubba, and Principal Catanzaro for this great and commendable teamwork between institutions, aiming to create the conditions for the socio-cultural growth of the territory, placing culture, good culture at the center.”

“This initiative,” explains Lions President Salemi, “aims to support the continuation of the education of young students in lower secondary school who have shown a particular propensity for study and who aim for ethical, individual, and social improvement through the values of truth, justice, democracy, and freedom. The evaluation criterion will be exclusively the merit of having best expressed the purpose of the scholarship, demonstrating knowledge of Piersanti Mattarella, his life model, his commitment to society, and his desire to serve the human person with truth and a full sense of justice. The student’s sense of responsibility in school and life, as well as their particular propensity for study and awareness of the value of culture and personal education as a perspective for future work and growth, will also be evaluated in the proposed works. ”
