L’Ars revives the Provinces, the plan for direct vote

The center-right is preparing for a blitz, for which there is a margin of maneuver of just a couple of weeks. The plan of the majority leaders is to cancel the second-level vote in the former Provinces a few days before the opening of the polls and to approve a law at the Ars reintroducing the direct election of presidents and councillors. The blitz was planned at Palazzo d’Orleans yesterday morning during a majority summit not devoid of doubts from some allies, especially the melonists. A complicated matter from a technical legal point of view but with huge political effects. With the calendar in hand, a countdown has begun in recent days that will lead, for the first time in Sicilian history, to the so-called second-level elections. This means that on December 15, only mayors and municipal councillors of the territory will be called to the polls to elect the presidents and assemblies of the Free Consortia (heirs of the former Provinces that never fully materialized). The same goes for the election of metropolitan councils, while the mayors of the capitals are automatically at the top of the Metropolitan Cities. But in recent days, doubts have been growing in the center-right about the entire procedure, which emerged strongly in the first majority summit held Monday morning. First and foremost, the leaders fear not having control over the mayors, who could build atypical alliances between neighboring administrations of different political colors in view of the elections.
