Policlinico Catania: “Zero tolerance for attacks”, report filed with prosecutor

The general manager of the Policlinico of Catania, Gaetano Sirna, as the legal representative of the company, has reported to the Prosecutor the individuals who in recent weeks have verbally and physically attacked healthcare workers on duty at the San Marco hospital emergency room. The latest episode dates back to the evening of October 16th. The reports, as explained by the Policlinico, “are part of the series of measures that the company management has taken to strengthen the ‘zero tolerance’ policy adopted towards acts of violence, physical or verbal, against healthcare workers.” “We can no longer allow – says Sirna – our healthcare professionals to be insulted and mistreated in our facilities while they are doing their job, and we will apply all necessary measures to protect them. From the data collected by the working group on assaults that we established almost two years ago, but also from the news, we have unfortunately found that the phenomenon is constantly growing and must be stopped. Therefore, we will report any act committed against the staff, seeking justice as happened last March, with the conviction of a man who had used violence and threats against two professionals. In the meantime – Sirna announces – we are already defining further prevention and protection initiatives including more training days, in addition to those already held during the year, so that healthcare workers are fully prepared to handle the most critical situations.”
