Sicily Storm Damage Reaches 10 Million: First Aid for Roads and Rivers

The damage assessment is still ongoing, and according to initial estimates, it could reach up to 10 million. The first monitoring report received yesterday on the cell phone of the head of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina, includes destroyed houses and businesses on the verge of collapse. Even though the council will decide today to allocate the first aid only for clearing roads from landslides, restoring river banks, and securing rocky slopes.

Less than 48 hours after the floods that hit Sicily, Renato Schifani will convene the government this afternoon and declare a state of emergency for the serious damage caused by the rains. Furthermore, funding will be allocated for 4 specific interventions. The first concerns the mouth of the Salso River, in the Agrigento area: an urgent intervention will be initiated to remove debris blocking the regular flow of water towards the sea. The second intervention to be funded today aims to overcome a huge landslide that has closed the entire road and suspended some commercial activities in Enna, near Pergusa, where a long stretch is still closed.
