Vulcano completes gas measurements in thermal lake area
A campaign of geochimical and geophysical measurements at Levante Bay and Faraglione in Vulcano has been completed as part of the Pianeta Dinamico-Wundervul project of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. The measurements included the monitoring of carbon dioxide emissions from the mud bath and soil, sulfuric acid concentration in the air, and temperature of the soil and bath. Researchers from different sections of the Institute in Palermo, Catania, Naples, and Rome conducted the tests simultaneously, and a weather station with an anemometer was also installed in the area. The research aims to create an integrated geo-database of data for this specific area of the island, which is densely populated in summer and exposed to various dangerous phenomena. The thermal pool had been seized by the Prosecutor’s Office of Barcellona di Gotto due to building violations, but after restoration by the Geoterme company, it was set to reopen until increased gas emissions halted the process. The new examinations will determine if the pool can finally be reopened to the delight of tourists seeking the health benefits of the mud baths.
