Improving cruise ship and ferry maneuvering at Porto Empedocle with works on Sciangula dock seabed.
The works of moving sediments from an operational area to an abandoned one within the port of Porto Empedocle started yesterday. Specifically, the sediments are being moved from the water in front of the Sciangula commercial quay on the Levante pier to a non-quay area on the side of the Crispi warehouses. Once the transfer is completed, it will improve the usability of the moorings, the safety of docking operations, and therefore the development of cruises and connections with the Pelagie Islands.
This has nothing to do with the dredging material from the port of Trapani, which is brought to Porto Empedocle and stored in a rear port area. The presence of an imposing dredger in the port has probably created unjustified alarm with photos, videos, and comments on social media: “Baseless allegations,” comments Luca Lupi, the general secretary of the Western Sicily Sea Port Authority.
“Especially in places that thrive on tourism, insinuating such suspicions only raises unnecessary discontent. There is no connection between the two interventions and there is no alarm. The materials handled are not dangerous for either the population or the environment because they are screened and verified upstream. After all the work done in recent years to redevelop our ports, we would never make such foolish mistakes. Our history and our actions, always focused on transparency and sustainability, speak for themselves.”
