Investigation on Training in Trapani: Football also seen as a source of votes for lobby
It is June 22, 2022, and coach Ignazio Chianetta (pictured with Nino Papania), who had left Dattilo soccer club a year earlier after leading them to promotion from Eccellenza to Serie D, becomes the coach of Asd Sc Mazarese 2. The new coach was strongly desired by the club’s president, Giampiero Giacalone.
Chianetta, however, has been a close friend of former senator Nino Papania for two years, who is involved in vocational training, and with whom he has a strong bond. Before confirming his willingness to Giacalone, two days prior, Chianetta informs Papania of the request to coach the team. This fact, according to the judge, Papania “is already aware of.”
Furthermore, in their conversation, Chianetta seeks Papania’s approval regarding the possibility of becoming the soccer team’s coach, as he does not want to cause any embarrassment or problems for Papania by potentially neglecting his own election campaign.
