Man sold non-existent cars online, tricked buyer into sending deposits via bank transfer, reported for fraud in Catania.

Using a fake social media profile, a 29-year-old man from Genoa allegedly carried out a series of scams over the past year, selling cars online for 2,500 euros each that were in excellent condition with low mileage, but did not actually exist. The police in Catania accuse him of making around 5,000 euros per month from these scams. The man was traced back by the police after a victim reported the scam to the Borgo Ognina police station. The victim had been enticed by the cheap price and contacted the suspect, who claimed to live in Agrigento. He requested an immediate transfer of 500 euros to a prepaid card to “reserve” the car. When the victim asked to see the car, the fake seller claimed it was locked in a garage in Agrigento and could not be viewed at the moment. The victim transferred the money and sent the receipt to the seller. The next morning, the seller called the victim claiming the transfer had not been received and demanded another immediate transfer of 500 euros, threatening not to deliver the car and to report the victim if they did not comply. The victim realized it was a scam at this point, stopped the transaction, and contacted the police.
