Priest convicted in Enna for sexual assault appeals against the sentence issued by the court

Giuseppe Rugolo, the priest sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison for “aggravated sexual assault against minors,” has appealed against the sentence issued by the Enna court on March 5th. The priest’s lawyers, Antonino Lizio and Dennis Lovison, contest the entire accusatory framework and request the reopening of the trial to take in exculpatory evidence for the defendant as well as to hear from two other young individuals.

The lawyers speak of illogical, contradictory, and erroneous reasoning that led the Enna court to distort “the documentation, issuing a motivation in which it arrives at incorrect conclusions as well as devoid of probative support, and consequently, to an incorrect verdict of guilt.”

Even the Curia of Piazza Armerina, deemed jointly responsible with Rugolo by the court, has appealed the sentence. Gabriele Cantaro, the lawyer of Bishop Rosario Gisana, argues that the Curia, being a legal entity without legal personality, cannot be held civilly responsible.

“The only legally recognized legal entities within the territorial scope of the Diocese of Piazza Armerina – as stated in the appeal – are the diocese and the bishop’s seminary, but certainly not the Curia.”
