Caltanissetta mothers return to the square to demand fair water distribution
The water emergency in the heart of Sicily is becoming increasingly serious. Between Enna and Caltanissetta, protests and declarations are ongoing. The regional CGIL union will demonstrate tomorrow at the Nicoletti dam in the territory of Leonforte in the province of Enna against the water emergency. The union is calling for immediate and concrete government intervention on the issues affecting Sicily and the Sicilian people.
In Caltanissetta, the “mothers of the historic center” have formed a committee and are demanding fairer water distribution, especially in areas where water arrives more frequently than the standard 6 days. The protesters met with the director of Caltaqua, Andrea Gallè, and the mayor of Caltanissetta, Walter Tesauro, who assured them that despite the imminent water shortage, there will be no negative changes in the water distribution schedule. Three new pumps purchased with funds from the civil protection agency will be installed in neighborhoods that have been waiting for water for over 124 days, such as Contrada Niscima and Poggio Fiorito. The committee of mothers is seeking clarity and has requested an urgent meeting with the prefect to provide certainty to the citizens.
In Caltanissetta, 12 silos will be installed to manage the emergency, a decision that has sparked debate and divided opinions. Regional president of Italia Nostra, Leandro Janni, has spoken out against the decision, as well as former mayor of Caltanissetta and current councilor, Roberto Gambino, who called it a “surrender”. Opposition councilor and former mayoral candidate, Annalisa Petitto, also criticized the move, stating that it will leave the city without water. Mayor Walter Tesauro responded, saying that the silos will only provide additional assistance to citizens and will not affect water distribution, which will continue as planned with water being provided on the standard 6-day schedule.
