Hiker rescued by helicopter in Madonie by Alpine rescue
Explanation of the article:
A joint operation between the Sicilian Alpine and Speleological Rescue and the 82nd SAR Center of the Italian Air Force was carried out in the area of Pizzo Catarineci, in the Madonie mountains, to rescue a hiker who had been injured in an accident. The man, a seventy-two-year-old from Castelbuono, was climbing the mountain with a friend when he slipped and fell in the beech forest at an altitude of 1,600 meters, possibly fracturing his femur.
Realizing the seriousness of the injuries, his companion called the emergency number 112. The 118 emergency center, knowing it was a medical emergency in a remote area, alerted the Alpine Rescue who then contacted the Italian Air Force, with whom they have a close collaboration.
At the same time, a team of SASS technicians from the Madonie mountains also headed to the scene by land. An HH-139B helicopter from the 82nd SAR Center of the 15th Wing took off from Trapani Birgi airport, carrying an Alpine Rescue technician to the location.
Once on site, the SASS specialist and an Air Force medic were lowered by winch to reach the man in the trees, immobilize his leg, strap him to a stretcher, and with the help of the ground team, they brought him out of the forest and lifted him aboard with the winch to quickly land him at Boccadifalco airport, where an ambulance from the 118 emergency service was waiting.
Meanwhile, the Madonie team had reached the companion, assisting him in descending to the location where they had left their car. The successful operation was also made possible thanks to the support provided by the IV Flight Department of the State Police stationed at Boccadifalco.
