41 migrants rescued after boat stranded in Marsala

The fishing boat stranded this morning on the northern shore of the port of Marsala had about sixty migrants on board. The incident occurred around 10 am. Numerous reports received by the number 1530 of the Coast Guard, by citizens, spoke of people in the water who were swimming to shore.

Under the coordination of the 12th Mrsc of Palermo, four naval units of the Coast Guard from Trapani, Mazara del Vallo, and Marsala were sent, as well as private citizens’ vessels. Some managed to reach the coast by swimming, while the other 41 (and not 14 as previously stated) were rescued on board the patrol boats and those in need of medical assistance were transported to the port of Marsala and assisted by the 118 personnel.

The other migrants, through the patrol boat Cp 331, were taken to the port of Trapani. Following checks on board by the Coast Guard personnel, at 1:30 pm the fishing vessel was refloated and safely brought to the port of Marsala.
