Palermo youth cancer survivors team up against doctors and nurses on the field.

The Aslti football team Sporting Warriors returned to the field for a friendly match with a team formed by healthcare personnel from the Civico hospital and the Villa delle Palme nursing home. The match took place this morning in Palermo, at the Don Orione fields. It was a new experience for the players who have recovered from cancer and are part of the project “From care to caring” promoted by the Sicilian association against leukemia and childhood cancers and the Ministry of Social Policies.

The match precedes the training camp that the team members and Aslti staff will attend next month in Taranto. “It will be another opportunity to strengthen the group,” underline Antonella Gugliuzza and Ilde Vulpetti, president and director of the operational area of Aslti. “Just like last year, we chose to offer the camp to combine sports competition with other moments of leisure and socialization that are part of our project’s objectives.”

Among the players on the team of healthcare personnel is Roberto Morici, a nurse from the Pediatric Oncology unit of the Civico Hospital, who emphasizes “the ethical and moral value of the meeting, as well as the great emotion of meeting former patients who were carefully and professionally treated for many months and are now healed and reintegrated into society.” At the Don Orione fields, the team was accompanied by UEFA B coaches Giuseppe Furfari and Daniele Cacciato and mental coach Rosellina Domilici.
