High risk of fires and extreme heat in Sicily: red alert by civil protection for Sunday, June 9

The summer is approaching, the heat is getting more intense, and the risk of wildfires is increasing. Last year’s nightmare in Sicily, with the arrest of the alleged perpetrators of the terrible fires in Capo Gallo, is still vivid. The Regional Civil Protection has issued a warning for wildfires and heatwaves, valid from midnight today until tomorrow, June 9. There is a high risk of wildfires in Palermo and Trapani provinces, with a red alert level. Palermo is expected to reach a maximum perceived temperature of 34 degrees. The Sicilian fear of experiencing another summer like the last one is undeniable. The forestry workers have started their duty earlier this year, but they are older and more focused on prevention rather than extinguishing fires. The helicopters and Canadair planes that were supposed to strengthen the Region’s aerial fleet have not arrived, as no bid was received. However, more fire trucks will be available, as the procurement for 120 of them has been completed after three years. This new approach was implemented by President Renato Schifani after the disastrous events of 2023, resulting in record fires and estimated damages of 246 million. The fire prevention plan started in May this year, earlier than usual, with teams of workers already working on firebreaks, cleaning risky areas, and assisting mayors in checking private properties.
