Rescue of 59 migrants onboard a boat in distress off Lampedusa

An operation joint between the Mare Jonio, a vessel of the NGO Mediterranea, and a Coast Guard patrol boat allowed the rescue of 59 people, including 2 pregnant women, who were on a overcrowded boat in distress. According to Mediterranea, the rescue took place 43 miles south of Lampedusa. The Rescue Team of Mare Jonio stabilized the boat in danger, distributed life jackets, and transferred the first survivors to the Italian Coast Guard patrol boat.
