50-year-old man convicted by Ragusa court for sexual violence against wife and family abuse.
An Albanian citizen, aged 50, has been sentenced in the first instance to 6 years and 6 months in prison by the court of Ragusa for sexual violence against his wife and for domestic abuse towards his children. The man, defended by lawyer Ferdinando Mauro Miranda, allegedly exhibited violent and abusive behavior towards his family from 2018 to 2023.
From the charges, the account of the violence carried out by the man, described as irascible, prone to alcohol abuse, and obsessively jealous, emerges. He did not want his wife to work, convinced that she was having extramarital affairs, and would insult her, threatening her with death. He demanded money to buy alcohol, and when she refused, he would brutally attack her, even holding a knife, often forcing her to comply with his demands. And then the non-consensual and violent sexual intercourse.
He had already been subject to a “family protection order” issued by Albanian authorities in 2018 and to orders to stay away from the family home and to the prohibition of approaching his wife issued by the Ragusa Court in 2021 and 2022. However, despite this, he would follow his wife, beat and insult his children when they intervened to defend their mother from him. Then an escalation of death threats, even stating that he would commit a family massacre, obsessed with jealousy and marital separation.
The ex-wife and daughter have joined as civil parties through lawyer Simona Cultrera. In the collegiate court of Ragusa, the public prosecutor had requested a 5-year prison sentence for the man. The court imposed a sentence higher than the prosecution’s request, sentencing the man to 6 years and 6 months in prison, ordering him to pay the legal costs of both sides and the maintenance during pre-trial detention; he will also have to compensate his ex-wife and daughter. The amount will be determined by the civil judge.
