12 Hospital Doctors on Trial for the Death of a Patient with Colitis

Twelve doctors from the hospital in Castelvetrano, Sicily, have been ordered to stand trial for involuntary manslaughter. The doctors, who were working in the medicine and surgery departments at the time, are accused of negligence in the death of Francesco Carbonello, a 55-year-old teacher who died in June 2019. Carbonello was initially admitted for acute colitis, but his condition did not improve after ten days of treatment and he was transferred to the surgery department, where he underwent two surgeries before he passed away. Carbonello’s family filed a complaint, which led to the legal proceedings. The trial is scheduled to begin on March 11, 2024.
