Three residents of Messina have been targeted for usury and extortion, with small business owners, employees, and retirees among the victims. The police, in coordination with the public prosecutor’s office, conducted a precautionary measure. The investigation began after one victim reported serious threats and harassment over a debt owed to a 59-year-old man with a criminal history. The suspect was placed in custody. It was revealed that loans were given at interest rates of up to 50% per month, or 600% annually. An accomplice involved in debt collection was also targeted with an obligation to appear before the police. One victim reported borrowing money from another person and repaying over twice the amount in just two weeks, resulting in the arrest of the 39-year-old man involved. The other accomplice was also subject to an obligation to appear before the police.
