In Stromboli, the crater is having a great time and is especially fascinating the many tourists who have returned to the Aeolian archipelago. “Iddu” has had ups and downs in terms of explosions and lava overflow for about ten days. But since yesterday evening, activity has been growing significantly. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etna Observatory, has reported that “it has confirmed that a major explosion has occurred in the northern crater area, and its products have fallen outside the crater terrace, flowing down onto the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco. From the surveillance cameras, no products have been observed falling on the Pizzo Sopra la Fossa area.
Simultaneously, at least two lava overflows have occurred from the northern crater area. At the moment, the lava fronts are located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco.”
“Seismically, according to the volcanologists at Ingv Etneo, all the Stromboli stations have recorded a seismic transient associated with a more intense explosion, followed by a subsequent increase in the average amplitude of volcanic tremors, which reached very high levels. The deformation data measured by the high-frequency GNSS network do not show any significant variations associated with the event.”
The spectacular photo was taken from the local “L’Osservatorio” crowded with tourists. And in the vicinity of the Sciara del Fuoco, there have also been several steamboats filled with tourists who did not want to miss the “fire show” of the Aeolian volcano.
