The Flyeye Astronomical Observatory will remain on the Madonie mountains, the government says it is strategic.

The Flyeye telescope, an indispensable tool for observing asteroids and space, is a strategically important asset and cannot be subjected to any constraints. This was decided by the Council of Ministers through a provision in the Asset and Investments decree. This decision will allow the Municipality of Isnello and the whole of Sicily to host an internationally important observatory in the Madonie Mountains, which the European Space Agency (ESA) had decided to locate on Mount Mufara.

“This is a result that I am proud of, which I have worked on together with regional councilor Elena Pagana, made possible by the Meloni government and, in particular, by Minister Urso,” comments Carolina Varchi, deputy of the Brothers of Italy party. She adds, “We listened to the concerns of the local community, including Mayor Catanzaro, about the risk of losing such an attraction in the Madonie region. Thanks to the concrete actions of the government, we are expressing interest in the villages and inland areas of our region. The ESA had identified that area for its extraordinary sky conditions, which allow for observations of the highest quality. The mayor himself had requested government intervention, which was promptly provided. Therefore, the project is saved and can be completed without constraints related to landscape and environmental considerations. Isnello will become home to one of the most important astronomical observatories in the world,” concludes Varchi.
