Sicilian astronaut Luca Parmitano to lead first Italian hypersonic flight

Luca Parmitano, an Italian astronaut and colonel in the Italian Air Force, expressed his willingness to test the first Italian hypersonic vehicle as a test pilot. The project, called HexaFly, aims to develop hypersonic civilian aircraft capable of traveling at 8 times the speed of sound, with the goal of connecting Rome and New York in just 2 hours. The European Space Agency has been working on the project since 2005, and hopes to conduct the first tests in 2025-26. Parmitano highlighted the challenge of the hypersonic flight and mentioned Italy’s unique facilities in the aerospace industry that could contribute to the project.
