The sewage that is pouring into the sea near the Secca della Maiorana sailing club, along the 113 state highway, is said to be a direct consequence of the seizure of the wastewater lifting plant in Casteldaccia, where five workers died a month ago. The president of the sports facility, Lucilla Piraino, is convinced of this and has reported a situation that is becoming unbearable, but some residents are also calling for the seals to be removed to proceed with the drainage works, currently blocked due to the tragedy.
On May 6, a team from Amap carried out an inspection that identified the problem in the same containment tank where maintenance workers lost their lives a few hours later. The problem has recurred cyclically in recent years, but despite repeated reports to the municipal company, the municipality, and the Coast Guard by residents and business owners in the area, a definitive solution to prevent discharge into the sea has never been found. Instead, the discharge of debris and organic waste from the town is said to have worsened after the incident, increasing significantly to the point where there is now a risk of pollution in this coastal area, which is heavily frequented especially in summer. In recent days, the finance police have carried out some checks, taking water samples for analysis, while technicians from Amap, which manages water and sewerage systems in the province’s towns, inspected manholes yesterday.
“The sea has turned brown – Piraino said – here the discharge is like a river in flood and it continues to worsen every passing day. What should we do, do I have to close the sailing club? And who will compensate us for lost revenue? My members rightly want to leave because they find excrements at their feet, but even diving and sailing activities are halted. I am ready to take legal action against Amap and the Region.”
