The environmental cameras in the barracks would have provided certainty of the criminal agreement between the two instigators and the killer. In a recording, the three suspects summoned by the carabinieri would have let slip expressions such as “we are all silent”, which would have further strengthened the investigators’ belief.
The defense strategies are being studied by the trusted lawyers of Luigi Costanza, 77 years old, from Comitini, accused of being the material executor of the double murder of Gaetano and Salvatore La Placa, father and son, killed on October 14, 1992 in the countryside of San Biagio Platani, in the province of Agrigento, and Carmela and Rosalba La Placa, respectively 56 and 67 years old, considered, in conspiracy, the instigators of the crime together with the mother, Rosalia Guadagnano (who has since died). The two victims were the father and grandfather of the two sisters.
Costanza, who lives in Comitini, is defended by lawyers Gaetano Timineri and Valentina Buongiorno. Rosalba La Placa, residing in San Biagio Platani, has entrusted her legal protection to lawyers Nino Gaziano and Anna Gaziano Mongiovì, while Carmela La Placa, residing in Santo Stefano di Quisquina, has appointed lawyer Sergio Spallino.
The notice of completion of the investigations was notified by the Prosecutor’s Office to the persons under investigation and their defenders who have twenty days to submit memoranda, produce documents, deposit documentation related to investigations of their defenders, request the prosecutor to carry out investigative acts, as well as to present themselves to give statements or request to be subjected to interrogation. According to the reconstruction of the Prosecutor’s Office on what was considered a cold case, the two women, daughters of Gaetano and sisters of Salvatore, together with the mother, would be the masterminds of the murder of the relatives matured in a climate of bitter family disputes. They could not bear the father-husband’s abuses and his decision to expel his son-in-law, Benedetto Losi, from the house. So, rather than reporting it, they would have commissioned the crime to Luigi Costanza, a clothing peddler and family friend. It was the wife and daughter, according to what was reconstructed, who alerted the killer as soon as Gaetano La Placa, accompanied by Salvatore, left the house to go to Contrada Mandralia, where the crime took place. Father and son, in a Fiat 127, were pulled over by Costanza, who shot the father and then the son in the head. Costanza, as a reward for the two murders, was given 50 million lire, a Jeep, and hunting dogs.
