Palermo’s theaters images showcased in Patrizia Mussa’s exhibit at Villa Zito

From June 7th to September 8th, Villa Zito in Palermo is hosting the exhibition by Patrizia Mussa “Theatricality – Architectures for Wonder”, curated by Antonio Calbi. Patrizia Mussa, a photographer specializing in architecture, showcases over 70 large-format images with hand-colored interventions that provide an analysis of theatricality in architecture and the scenic quality of theaters throughout Italy. The exhibition, promoted by the Sicilia Foundation and produced by Studio Livio with the support of Gemmo SpA, is inaugurated on June 6th and open to the public from the following day.

The exhibition features descriptive photographs of the sumptuous architectural heritage of theaters, as well as the concept of theater as a “social agora”, a place for the community to gather, observe and be observed, a kind of secular temple where the intangible can emerge. The project includes works related to historic theaters such as the Greek Theater of Segesta, the Politeama Theater of Palermo, Villa Palagonia in Bagheria, and the antique theater brought to Paris by Ottavio Lanza di Branciforte in the early 1900s.

The exhibition also includes a section on ancient Sicilian theaters from the collection of prints and drawings of the Sicilia Foundation, curated by art historian Sergio Troisi. This section showcases prints, drawings, and travel volumes that contributed to the rediscovery of Sicilian archaeological sites during the Grand Tour era, providing modern European culture with forms and models of the classical world’s scenic space.

“I am delighted to start my term,” says Maria Concetta Di Natale, new president of the Sicilia Foundation, “with an excellent photographic exhibition that traces the history and transformation of theaters while showcasing the wonders of Sicily. This exhibition, enriched with precious drawings and prints of ancient theaters of the island, will be more widely known and appreciated by the public.”
