Explain to me briefly the following article:
In Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in Palermo, on the occasion of Republic Day, this morning (June 2nd) a commemorative wreath was laid at the Monument to the Fallen. The celebrations for the 78th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic took place in front of delegations of military bodies: present, among others, were Mayor Roberto Lagalla and Prefect Massimo Mariani.
“We must remember where we come from – Prefect Mariani told journalists -: a country destroyed and that had experienced twenty years of a dictatorial regime. But we must also be aware of what the Italians are capable of doing. Republic Day also serves to give confidence. In particular, this year, June 2nd falls just a few days before an important election appointment. It is not rhetorical to say that it comes at a crucial stage from an international point of view, with great dangers on the horizon. Certainly, the European values, which the war denied, should be emphasized.”
