The mother and son had left Sicily long ago in search of a better life. They had left behind Mussomeli, the small capital of the Vallone where they lived in the heart of the Nisseno hinterland, to start a new life. They had chosen to move to England, where they had integrated well over the years and had also found work. However, last Tuesday, Maria Nugara and Giuseppe Morreale were found dead by the police in their home on Cambridge Road around 10 pm. Rescuers were unable to save them. The investigation took a turn in just a few days.
Investigators’ attention immediately turned to a 63-year-old man, Calogero Ricotta, a builder. He was the woman’s partner after her separation from her husband. The man, also from Mussomeli, was arrested last Friday on suspicion of being the alleged perpetrator of the double homicide. He is also charged with assault. Maria Nugara, 54, originally from Sutera, lived in the village of Ugley, in Essex, just over an hour from London, in a secluded and green-filled house.
The full story by Donata Calabrese can be found in the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper.
