Life imprisonment for Romano brothers and nephew in Palermo Burgio murder

The substitute attorney general Sergio Barbiera has requested life imprisonment for the brothers Domenico and Matteo Romano who are on trial for the murder of Emanuele Burgio that occurred on May 30, 2021 in Vucciria, Palermo. Domenico was acquitted in the first trial, defended by lawyers Giovanni Castronovo and Enzo Giambruno, while Matteo Romano was sentenced to 18 years in prison, defended by lawyer Raffaele Bonsignore. Life imprisonment was also requested for the nephew of the latter, Giovan Battista Romano, who was sentenced to 18 years in the first trial, defended by lawyer Castronovo. The Appeals Court, chaired by Angelo Pellino, rejected the requests to reopen the trial to hear the justice collaborators Alessio Puccio and Giovanni Ferrante. The prosecution argued that the murder was premeditated due to conflicts between the victim and the Romano brothers over drug dealing territories. The appeal was filed by prosecutors Giovanni Antoci and Gaspare Spedale. They contested Domenico Romano’s acquittal and the exclusion of premeditation for the other two defendants, which allowed them to avoid life imprisonment and receive a reduced sentence. The defense did not appeal in order to benefit from a one-third reduction in sentence as provided by the Cartabia reform. The trial was adjourned to July 1 for the defense’s closing arguments.
