Investigation on two landfills in Catania concluded: many suspects, including Leoluca Orlando

The Catania Public Prosecutor’s Office has appealed against the decision of the judge who rejected the seizure of assets from the Rap di Palermo and Oikos companies in the context of the investigation into the Valanghe d’inverno and Tiritì landfill sites. In recent days, the NOE carabinieri and the judicial police section notified 32 suspects of the conclusion of the investigation, in which various crimes were hypothesized related to the management and disposal of hundreds of thousands of tons of waste. Among the suspects are the entrepreneurs of Oikos Spa, Orazio and Domenico Proto, the head of the regional Civil Protection department Salvatore Cocina, and others. The investigation also implicated the former mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando, and three commissioners appointed by the prefect of Catania for the landfill management.

The investigation also involved two companies, Rap di Palermo Spa and Oikos Spa. According to the allegations, Rap di Palermo would have deposited undifferentiated urban waste in the landfills managed by Oikos, allowing the companies to gain substantial profits. The public prosecutors signed the conclusion of the investigation and appealed the judge’s decision to reject the seizure of assets from the companies. Orlando commented on the investigation, emphasizing the lack of public infrastructure and the presence of private oligopolies chosen by the Region, which he had formally denounced in the past.
