Expansion of Palazzo Branciforte museum approved by Palermo, to be carried out by Fondazione Sicilia

The Palermo City Council unanimously approved the urban planning variation proposed by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Maurizio Carta, which authorizes the derogation for the project proposed by the Fondazione Sicilia to expand the museum space with a new area for temporary exhibitions, recognizing the public interest for the purposes of urban regeneration, containment of land consumption, and social and urban recovery. The new museum complex, designed by internationally renowned architect Mario Cucinella, will be located in place of a degraded building in Piazza Guzzetta in front of the rear part of Palazzo Branciforte and aims to enrich the historic center of Palermo with a contemporary sign of urban regeneration. The project seeks to promote and support development projects, offer the public better access to cultural assets and museum activities, increase usability of spaces, and contribute to the requalification of the surrounding public space. The decision marks an important cultural change and highlights the need for collaboration between public and private entities. The Fondazione Sicilia is grateful to the mayor, Roberto Lagalla, the councilor, Maurizio Carta, and the entire city council for approving the demolition and reconstruction project of the building in Piazza Guzzetta, designed by architect Mario Cucinella, which redevelops and regenerates the entire neighborhood. After the opening of Palazzo Branciforte in 2012 and Villa Zito in 2015, the Fondazione Sicilia is committed to creating a new cultural space with eco-sustainable architecture, demonstrating ongoing efforts for the socio-cultural development of Palermo.
