Boy missing at sea, migrants arrived in Lampedusa: fell overboard while climbing the ladder.

A 14-year-old boy from Senegal, who has been missing for two days, fell into the sea while climbing the rescue ladder. Some of the 67 rescued migrants and the crew of the merchant ship, Maersk Aegean, helped reconstruct what happened by speaking with the coast guard and police investigators in Agrigento.

The group was on a 10-meter boat that sailed from Gas Garabulli in Libya and was intercepted in Libyan waters. The crew of the merchant ship noticed the boat’s poor buoyancy and began rescue operations, transferring all migrants. It was during these operations that the 14-year-old boy, who was traveling alone, slipped as he climbed the rescue ladder to the merchant ship.

The 67 migrants were then transferred to the coast guard patrol boat Cp319 and arrived in Lampedusa. They are now in the island’s hotspot, where there were 199 guests this morning. On the orders of the prefecture of Agrigento, 178 migrants will be transferred by charter flight to Fiumicino Airport.
