Altavilla: Raids in Horror Villa, Barreca at Risk in Enna, Transferred to Barcellona Prison

Giovanni Barreca has left the Enna prison to be taken to the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto prison, which, with the reform of the penitentiary system, accommodates both detainees and psychiatric patients. This is the second time that the former painter – accused of killing his wife Antonella Salamone and his children Kevin and Emanuel, aged 16 and 5, with the help of his minor daughter and Sabrina Fina and Massimo Carandente in the massacre of Altavilla Milicia – has been moved to a facility that can provide him with better supervision and assistance. However, this new transfer is said to have been decided for his safety after some inmates at Enna reportedly shouted insults at him and threw objects at him. In late March, the Pagliarelli prison management had also decided to quickly transfer him to another penitentiary after receiving threats for proposing to perform an exorcism to free his cellmate from possession through prayer, causing tensions within his section and increasing the risk of possible retaliation.

But the distance from the capital city is causing several problems for the defense team, who have to make a long trip every time they want to meet with Barreca. The lawyer Giancarlo Barracato explained, “We don’t understand this disparity in treatment compared to Sabrina Fina and Massimo Carandente. It’s certainly not to protect him, since in Barcellona, despite being in isolation, he is in a cell with another inmate.” He has filed another request for Barreca to be brought back to a prison in Palermo or another facility closer to his residence, as mandated by law. The Prosecution has provided the lawyers with all the investigations carried out on the suspects’ phone records and logs: in the coming days, Fina and Carandente will be questioned by magistrates, while their defense lawyer has requested to inspect the crime scene at the horror villa where a bedroom shutter and a gate lock were stolen. Investigators have set up a camera to monitor the surroundings of the house and garden at night, as there are suspicions of vandalism or possibly a macabre fetishism.
