This article discusses an upcoming underwater research campaign that will take place on the island of Ustica, off the coast of Palermo, from March 15th to April 30th, 2024. The project is a collaboration between the Cranfield University of the UK, the Soprintendenza del mare of the Sicilian Region, the coast guard, the Municipality, and the marine protected area of the island. The goal is to identify new archaeological evidence and shipwrecks in order to plan potential recoveries and conservation efforts. The campaign will involve an investigation along the entire perimeter of the island, at depths ranging from 50 to 300 meters, covering an area of about 36 square kilometers. Two autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) equipped with side scan sonar will be used to map the underwater terrain of Ustica, utilizing acoustic waves to collect data for the creation of detailed underwater maps.
