The first day of Dominate The Water, the event created by world champion swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri, has come to an end in Mondello. The event saw a doubling in numbers compared to last year, with around 400 swimmers of all ages and categories participating in open water competitions. The first day of races in the Gulf waters featured athletes competing in the “3 kilometers” race, with Simone Capostagno taking first place for men, followed by Tiziano Tripodi and Andrea Di Piazza. Among the women, Federica Sirchia claimed victory for the second consecutive year, with Adela Pascaru and Gaia Piccione following closely behind.
In the men’s master category, Mauro Filippo Gully recorded the best time, followed by Matteo Pelagalli Ficorilli and Vittorio Ferrari. For the women masters, Manuela Maltinti finished first, Annamaria Sapuppo second, and Alice Romanelli third.
Paltrinieri, despite an elbow injury suffered at the closing ceremony of the Olympics, praised Sicily as his second home. While he did not compete, he did take a swim upon arriving at the beach. Tomorrow morning, athletes will compete in the “mile at sea” race, starting from the former Charleston beach club at 10:30. Following the final awards ceremony, the AIRC Sprint Race, a 500-meter race aimed at raising awareness about the harm of smoking, will take place in collaboration with the AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research. The event, organized by DTW Srl and sponsored by the Sicilian Region and the City of Palermo, aims to support cancer research with donations that can be made at the AIRC stand.
