Waste burned in Palermo, Zen neighborhood, the fire also threatened houses and cars.

While the Rapid Action Police force is working overtime to contain the emergency situation, there were several incidents of waste fires in Palermo last night as well. The most severe situation occurred in the Zen neighborhood, where the accumulated garbage from days of missed collection was set on fire, following the landfill fire that occurred on July 24th last year.
There were also high flames near several vehicles and some houses, fortunately without reaching them. Several teams of firefighters were needed to extinguish the fires. There were also other incidents in the neighborhoods of Bonagia and Falsomiele, where waste was set on fire and firefighters were called to put out the multiple fires. These incidents occur every night. On Friday night, an incident happened on Di Vittorio Street in the Sperone district, just a few meters away from the mural with the image of Biagio Conte created by the artist Igor Scalisi Palminteri.
The waste management company operating in the city center stated that they are close to completing the extraordinary collection plan implemented after the landfill fire. However, the company, which is responsible for waste management in the city, also has to deal with the issue of migration: the abandonment of bulky waste by those coming from neighboring countries has not stopped, forcing the operators to divide their limited resources further, thus slowing down the already defined routes. Among the roads most affected by the extra-city waste are Nicoletti Street and the area behind Cervello Hospital. Rap also announced that the Marinella neighborhood has been fully cleaned up, while Calcante Street will be cleaned up in the next few hours. Tommaso Natale, Mandorle Square, Sant’Isidoro Street, Santa Maria Mazzarello Street, and Guarnieri Street have already been cleaned. The collection is still ongoing in the Messina Marine area, where some teams will take care of the last collection points on Li Gotti Street and Kolbe Street, followed by Tira a Segno Street.
By tomorrow, Rap will conclude the collection routes in the Zen 2 area, where four streets have been left out of the collection. The same deadline should apply for the remaining small hills along Corso dei Mille and Sperone, which have also been affected and burdened by the migration phenomenon. The situation in Falsomiele, another of the neighborhoods affected by last night’s fires, has been resolved as well. In recent days, the collection had slowed down due to some faulty vehicles, but by tomorrow, the large piles should be no longer present.
