Victim of 2013 migrant shipwreck in Lampedusa identified after 11 years
The article reports the identification of one of the 368 victims of the migrant shipwreck on October 3, 2013 near the island of Conigli in Lampedusa. The migrant PM 357 now has a name and surname: he was Weldu Romel, a 27-year-old Eritrean. His details will be engraved on a tombstone that will be placed in the monumental cemetery of Caltagirone, in Catania, on May 6.
The identification was made possible thanks to the work of the Labanof institute of the University of Milan and the Extraordinary Commissioner for Missing Persons. Weldu Romel’s body, identified with the code AM 16, was buried in the cemetery of Caltagirone in October 2013.
The ceremony for the placement of the tombstone with his name and surname will be attended by the Prefect of Catania, the Mayor of Caltagirone, the Imam of Catania, the vicar general of the Diocese of Caltagirone, the President of the October 3 Committee, a project coordinator of Caltagirone, and a nominee for the “Righteous” for having saved 47 people during the tragedy.
The Mayor of Caltagirone states that being able to give an identity to one of the victims buried in the cemetery is an act of great civilization and profound respect for those who have lost their most precious possession, life, in the vain attempt to pursue the dream of a better existence.
The President of the October 3 Committee stresses the importance of giving a name and a proper burial to the victims of shipwrecks, emphasizing that denying this right goes against every principle of humanity. He expresses hope that the same can be done for the hundreds of unnamed victims still buried in many cemeteries in the country.
