Vandal raid: Cathedral door in Syracuse defaced with oil

An individual with a jerry can was seen on surveillance cameras pouring black liquid, possibly motor oil, on the street next to the basilica of San Giovanni alle Catacombe and in front of the entrance to the Basilica, the first Cathedral of Syracuse. Municipal police officers intervened and the parish priest filed a report with the police to identify the man. The mayor of Syracuse, Francesco Italia, condemned the act, stating that defacing a monument is always reprehensible, especially in the case of the basilica of San Giovanni, a symbolic place for Christian history in Syracuse. The mayor expressed the expectation that the perpetrator be punished for offending and disgracing the city’s residents.
