Vaccines, Sicily focuses on over 50s but AstraZeneca remains taboo: half of the doses are still in the fridge

Despite the good response from the over 50s, Sicily’s vaccination campaign continues to trudge. The national report remains merciless: the island is in last place for doses administered with just 78.3%, while all the other regions have reached at least 80. Up to now, of the 26 million 916,650 doses of the anti-Covid vaccine delivered to Italy, 23,349,402 have been administered (equal to 87%). Therefore 3,567,248 remain in the fridge.

Of these, approximately 3 million are equally divided between AstraZeneca and Pfizer, which has the highest administration rate: 92% of the 17,796,870 delivered doses, while AstraZeneca is 76% of the 6,565,080 delivered. Moderna is 82% (out of 2,217,900) .The lowest share is recorded by the single-dose J&J, with 46% of administrations (out of 336,800). The largest quantities of AstraZeneca not used are in Sicily (52%), Province of Trento (56%), Basilicata (57%), confirming the distrust of the Sicilians on the Anglo-Swedish serum.

Nello Musumeci receives the first dose of Astrazeneca vaccine

Also for this the president Nello Musumeci, who received the first dose yesterday, has chosen to receive AstraZeneca: “I received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine – said the governor -. I am happy to have joined the ranks of Sicilians who are heading towards total immunization. I hope that this action of mine can be shared by those who are in the same conditions as me. We are fighting very hard battles to lower the age of citizens admitted to the vaccine and we have finally arrived also in the smaller islands. Let’s move on, because we have to get out of this tunnel as soon as possible. And I am convinced that we will succeed “.

Musumeci’s optimism, however, clashes with the slowness of the Sicilian countryside, which he hopes to finally be able to find the right acceleration thanks to the over 50 category. At the Palermo fair, on the first day of administration, 600 were vaccinated and yesterday it was the turn of another 1,100 people. In Catania, on the other hand, the record figure of 7,000 vaccinations in one day was reached while mass immunization in the small islands proceeds. Numbers that bode well but are still not enough to meet the necessary standards.
