Vaccines in the Churches of the Island. Unique initiative in Italy

The anti-Covid vaccinations began regularly at 8 and will continue until 18.30 in the 300 parishes in Sicily that have joined the initiative, the only one in Italy, for the administration of the vaccine in churches. Thanks to the memorandum of understanding signed by the President of the Region, Nello Musumeci and by the President of the Cesi, Archbishop Salvatore Gristina. Despite the strong commitment of the Trapani Church, where two Dioceses insist, that of Trapani with the bishop Pietro Maria Fragnelli and that of Mazara, with Monsignor Domenico Mogavero, unfortunately the response of those who asked to be vaccinated in churches today was modest. A thousand faithful in the diocese of Trapani, 421 in that of Mazara del Vallo. Numbers far from what one imagined. In order not to frustrate everything in the Diocese of Trapani, the plan was thus reworked, merging the adhesions. From the original 21 parishes, the number has been reduced to ten.
Nearly six thousand people, aged 69 to 79, will receive the vaccine in parish hubs today. «It is an initiative, so far unique in Italy – affirms the president of the Region, Nello Musumeci – which has ethical as well as practical value and directly reaches the Sicilians who wish to get vaccinated while they participate in the Easter celebrations, on Holy Saturday. Ever since the national government made available the first doses of the vaccine for Sicilians, every effort we made has been aimed at ensuring that the vaccination campaign could involve the greatest number of people. “
” It is a message of hope that we intend to send on the eve of Easter – says the president of the Cesi and archbishop of Catania, Salvatore Gristina – and, at the same time, an opportunity for closeness and solidarity towards the most fragile people, in the tradition of the Church that wants to be a community which promotes people’s health “.
The vaccination points in the parishes will be operational until 6.30 pm.
