Expand knowledge about nature in the city and learn about its importance through active participation, aggregating and activating the community in the discovery and care of green areas, involving the many civic realities already involved in the management of green areas, urban parks, social gardens and gardens shared, with focus in the 14 metropolitan areas / cities; identify critical points and pilot experiences on the best management of green spaces and urban biodiversity in the local area, to make examples of the good governance of nature in the city.
These are the objectives of Urban Nature 2019, the feast of nature in the city created by the WWF and now in its third edition, which aims to discover the value of our urban biodiversity, involving citizens and schools in citizen science and citizen conservation events. To date, there are 40 Italian locations where more initiatives are planned for the "Urban Nature 2019" event on Sunday 6 October: treasure hunts to discover biodiversity, guided tours, bike rides to explore nature in the city, put on tree house, painting, drawing and photography laboratories, maintenance of didactic and herb gardens, naturalistic art exhibitions.
In the first two editions, more than 200 initiatives were carried out in over 80 Italian cities, some of which were included in "School-Work Alternation" programs. The theme of nature in the city was also dedicated to a contest for schools, protagonists of the redevelopment of their territory. 180 classes participated planning actions to increase the biodiversity of the school garden, of their surroundings and of the entire city. Friday, October 4, Italian schools of all levels will present local institutions and citizenship projects to enhance urban biodiversity: such as the redevelopment of school spaces or an external area or other types of urban-level intervention to increase presence of nature in the city. Central event of Urban Nature 2019 will be on Sunday 6 October in Bologna, with guided tours, thematic insights and experiential workshops in the Biodiversity Village.
Sunday 6 October at the Parco della Favorita in Palermo guided tour to discover the vegetable riches. Also on Sunday 6 October at the Bellini garden in Catania an information banquet will be set up and a photographic hunt will be held in search of urban biodiversity within the park. On Saturday 5 October there will be a guided tour organized by the WWF at the Rosamarina Dam in Caccamo. The appointment is at 5.00 pm at the Vincenzo Florio Garden, the visit will last about 2 hours and will be led by Silvio Fici, Associate Professor at the University of Palermo, Department of Agricultural, Food and Forest Sciences. Also on Saturday 5, at the Chico Mendez urban park in Giarre, the children of the Institute including Giarre, accompanied by WWF volunteers, will do painting and tree recognition workshops through guided walks along the park's paths. In Mazara Sunday 6 hours appointment at 10.00 to the Norman Arch, with the walk "In Search of Urban Biodiversity".
"Urban Nature 2019" has already received the Patronages of the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea, the Ministry of Health and the ANCI. "Urban Nature" was created thanks to the commitment of volunteers and the WWF network active in the area and the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the National Association of Scientific Museums (ANMS) and the command of forestry units , environmental and agri-food (CUFAA) of the Carabinieri.
