Developing the skills necessary to operate in an international legal context and to respond to the new challenges of contemporary law. With this goal, starting from the new academic year 2024-2025, the single-cycle master’s degree in Law at the University of Palermo, thanks to synergy with the University Language Center (Cla), adds a new path called Legal Studies. A project that has allowed the Department of Law at Unipa to obtain recognition as a “department of excellence” by the Ministry of University and Research for the five-year period 2023-2027. “A further commitment of this university – underlines the Rector of the University of Palermo, Massimo Midiri – to train qualified professionals capable of working in international contexts and to become more attractive not only for our young people, but also for all those talents from other European and non-European regions who see the Mediterranean area as a strategic hub to focus on.”
The educational offer in Legal Studies includes 20 courses taught entirely in English for a total of 119 training credits out of a total of 300 credits provided for in the study plan. “Students who choose this path – explains Marco Brigaglia, Delegate for Teaching at the Department of Law – will have the opportunity to carry out internships in work contexts that involve the habitual use of the English language. For example, working in international law firms or within governmental and non-governmental organizations will be possible. It will also be possible to develop one’s thesis in English at foreign universities.”
Thanks to synergy with the University Language Center, students enrolled in Legal Studies will have the opportunity to participate in a language enhancement program, structured over the five years, which will conclude with preparation for the Ielts test (International English Language Testing System). In 2023, over 2,800 Unipa students were followed by Cla for the enhancement of linguistic skills. Numbers that the university estimates to confirm also for 2024. Not only English courses but also courses in Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Arabic, and Russian both in person and online.
“The University Language Center – says Daniela Tononi, president of the Cla – also issued over 460 Open Badges in 2023 for a total of 17 projects activated. Data that, according to estimates, will increase for 2024. Open Badges are digital certificates issued by Unipa to document the linguistic skills achieved by both internal and external users of the university. In this way, the acquired skills are immediately visible within the education and training circuits and in the European job market. The activation of this new path in Legal Studies confirms the central role that the Cla plays in developing linguistic skills, in promoting the internationalization policy of the university, and in supporting the linguistic policies promoted by the European Union.”
