Ten Ukrainian students seeking asylum, or awaiting temporary protection in Italy, will be able to register for free and attend study courses at the University of Catania.
This is what is foreseen by the Unict4Ucraine initiative, launched by the governing bodies of the University last May, within the framework of the internationalization and reception policies of the Etna University, as announced by the rector Francesco Priolo in numerous public interventions following the invasion by the Russian army.

Ukrainian students who adhere to the call published a few days ago on the website www.unict.it, once they have checked their previous or interrupted studies due to the war, will be able to benefit from the total exemption of tuition fees, obtain free accommodation , attend an Italian course and also compete for the assignment of a scholarship of 2000 euros, taking advantage of the administrative support of the offices in charge of international relations as regards all the procedures and the progressive insertion into the university life of Catania.

Applications must be sent by 30 June to the email address ukraine@unict.it, complete with curriculum vitae, photocopy of passport, university booklet and motivational letter.

A request from the cultural and student associations and from the Student Council of the University of Catania is thus also accepted, clearly expressed during a meeting that was held at the Central Palace on 4 March last.
“We ask the University of Catania to promote initiatives for the benefit of all Ukrainian students who today do not have the opportunity to continue their academic career – proposed Lorenzo Commis, president of the University Student Council -, in accordance to the statutory objectives and on the basis of the university’s economic, logistical and structural resources, building humanitarian and cultural bridges that allow all those who need them to be able to come to us ”.
On that same occasion, the pro-rector Francesca Longo had guaranteed that “the University of Catania is ready to welcome Ukrainian students, researchers and teachers to guarantee them the right to study, research and training and to this end we have already taken action coordinated with the Ministry of University and Research and the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities and also with the European association of young researchers and in close collaboration with Ersu.
We are trying, in this particularly difficult moment for international politics, to provide our contribution with every form and action of inclusion and hospitality for all those who unfortunately are now unable to carry out their studies and research “.

“The University of Catania has among its strategic objectives the social inclusion processes in which the reception of refugee students and teachers who work in political contexts in which academic freedom is at risk is an essential element”, underlined Prof.
Lucia Zappalà, delegate for Internationalization.
Among these initiatives, tenders are already active for the assignment of specific international mobility grants to scholars, professors and researchers from Ukrainian universities and research centers promoted by the Department of Law, the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment and by CoEHAR, the Research Center for the Reduction of Harm from Smoking of the University of Catania.
