Two new head physicians at the ASP of Ragusa: doctors Vincenzo Salvo and Carmelo Lauretta

The new director of the UOC of Neonatal Intensive Care of the “Giovanni Paolo II” hospital in Ragusa is dr. Vincenzo Salvo, 45, born in Vittoria. Dr. Salvo arrives from the Messina Polyclinic.

First in the competition for director of the UOC of Neonatal Intensive Care.

The young primary has a very respectable curriculum, despite his young age. In fact, in 2018 he also completed the path for the International Research Doctorate, obtaining the prestigious PhD title, at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, developing an important research project, in collaboration with prestigious Italian and European universities and hospitals. , on the most innovative methods of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation for premature babies suffering from severe respiratory insufficiency.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Pediatrics, with full marks, from the University of Catania. He also obtained a II level University Master in Pediatric Cardiology, at the AOU Policlinico “G. Martino ”, University of Messina and a 2nd Level University Master in Pediatric Intensive Care, -“ A. Gemelli ”- Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome.

Since 2007 he has worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the AOU Policlinico “G. Martino ”of Messina, dedicating himself above all to the clinical assistance of newborns and children in very critical conditions, developing highly professional skills in the context of Critical Intensive Care for the management of highly complex and highly intensive pathologies. He held the role of vicar of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, as well as head of the Team for vascular access in the neonatal and pediatric area.

During his professional career he has deepened, both from a clinical and scientific research point of view, the knowledge on mechanical respiratory support techniques and technologies, even the most innovative, necessary for the treatment of acute respiratory failure, on management and monitoring. hemodynamic in cases of severe cardiovascular impairment and on the management of the newborn / infant with severe neurological pathology.

He has also dedicated himself to the assistance of pediatric patients suffering from complex chronic pathology, dependent on high-tech devices, for which he has developed projects aimed at establishing a hospital-territory network for the implementation of home care services.

Dr. Vincenzo Salvo has completed the training courses and obtained the certifications as a pediatric resuscitation instructor, as an instructor-trainer of “Techniques and technologies for neonatal respiratory assistance” and as an implantator of central venous catheters and was a teacher at II level University Masters . He has conducted, directed and participated in several multicentre clinical studies, in collaboration with important Italian and foreign hospitals and universities such as the University of Maastricht (Holland) and the Maastricht University Medical Center with which he continues to have scientific collaboration relationships.

He is the author of several publications in important international scientific journals. Speaker at numerous congresses on various themes of Neonatology.

He is a member of several scientific societies: Italian Society of Pediatrics SIP, Italian Society of Neonatology SIN, Italian Society of Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Urgency SIMEUP. In addition, he was a member of the SIMEUP regional board of directors as a councilor and was elected in 2018 to the board of directors of the Neonatal Pneumology Study Group of the Italian Society of Neonatology.

Carmelo Lauretta, classe 1954. Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia Università degli Studi di Catania.  

The commitment of doctor Lauretta, for over twenty years at the forefront of the hotspot of Pozzallo and Ragusa as head of the health service of the structure during which he followed and treated thousands of migrants, becoming an expert in migration medicine and sure reference for the Prefecture has earned him the recognition of Knight of the Republic. Award given to him a few days ago in the ceremony that took place in the Prefecture of Ragusa.

Doctor Lauretta since the beginning of the Covid-19 emergency has been identified as the referent of the Prevention Department for the aforementioned pathology in the District of Modica.

Specialization in Hygiene with Public Health orientation achieved in 1986. Subsequently, he specialized in Hygiene with Hygiene orientation and hospital technique in 1988.

He boasts a very high level of expertise in the area of ​​issues related to migrants. In fact, with the 2014 Council Decree, subsequently reconfirmed in 2017, he was a member of the Group for the adoption of the regional migrant health contingency plan. He played and still plays the role of Asp coordinator in the reception centers.

From 2015 to today he is responsible and referent of the then CPSA – First Aid and Reception Centers – today called the “hot spot” of Pozzallo.

He began his career in Nicosia’s USL as a full-time medical officer. Subsequently, he worked as a health assistant in the Augusta Local Health Authority.

In 1992, always with the qualification of Health Assistant, he began his activity in the Syracuse Local Health Authority until 1993, when he arrived at the Health and Living Environments Service UOC of the ASP of Ragusa.
