Tunisian community in Vittoria shows solidarity after fire tragedy

Yesterday evening, June 21, Piazza del Popolo, in Vittoria, was the venue for a solidarity demonstration for the Zaouali family, who were victims of the fire set by their son, Wajdi Zaouali, in the middle of the night. In the fire, Mariam Sassi, 55 years old, and her daughter Sameh, 34 years old, died. The father Kamel Zaouali, 57 years old, and the other sister, Omaima, 19 years old, were severely burned and are still hospitalized in serious condition. The Zaouali family had reported the violence and threats of their son, who was under treatment at the mental health department.

The demonstration was organized by some members of the Islamic community. “One cannot be left free if they threaten with death until they actually kill,” read one of the banners. Another one said: “We cannot remain indifferent to violence.” The mayor Francesco Aiello, the municipal councilor Francesca Corbino, and the councilor Valentina Argentin intervened. The demonstration ended with a prayer recited by Imam Chouaf Labbadi.

Next Tuesday, in the cemetery of Vittoria, an autopsy will be performed on the bodies of the two victims. Then the bodies will be returned to the family for the funeral ritual, it is not yet known if in Vittoria or in Tunisia. The mayor will proclaim a city mourning on the day of the funeral.
