Three agents killed in the Mineo incident, city mourns their loss

Per Mineo, in the province of Catania, is the day of the final farewell. The funerals of Gianluca Barbanti, Piero Tatoli, and Giuseppe Spampinato, the three prison police officers who died in a car accident on August 19, will be held in the afternoon, when the wake in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore closes. Mayor Giuseppe Mistretta has announced a city mourning: “The decision is in accordance with our tragically departed fellow citizens and the strong grief felt by the families involved. The funeral will begin at 4 pm. In addition, regarding the celebrations for our patron saint’s festival, in honor of beloved Santa Agrippina, in agreement with the parish priest, Don Matteo Malgioglio, and the president of the local association, Maria Michela Toro, it has been decided to only hold strictly religious and devotional activities next Saturday and Sunday. Thanking all those who have expressed their condolences and support to the victims’ families and the community I represent.” The lives of the three officers were cut short by a terrible collision with a car that occurred on the SR 385 road, between Palagonia and Mineo. The accident happened just after their shift had ended. Barbanti, 38 years old, was married and a father of one child, with another on the way. Spampinato, 49 years old, was also married and a father of one child, and he loved dogs. Tatoli, 48 years old, was also married and a father of one child. Piero was passionate about horses, and his social media profiles were filled with pictures of him riding show horses. Spampinato and Barbanti died at the scene of the impact, while Tatoli was urgently transported by helicopter to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, where he passed away a few hours later.
